Lydney Men I 3 – Cardiff & UWIC 2
The Mens 1st XI welcomed runaway league leaders Cardiff & UWIC to Whitecross this weekend in what turned out to be a thoroughly entertaining match for a large crowd.
Cardiff took the early spoils when a speculative shot from the edge of the D managed to find its way past in form keeper James Linley, having just returned from a Wales Masters trial. Following this set back, the defensive four of Ed Aldridge, James, Cotterall and Saunders tightened up and started to control the game from the back.
With Captain Andy Horn leading the midfield, Lydney were soon attacking and creating numerous chances. They were unlucky not to get onto the score sheet when Mark Lawson saw a shot fly past the post.
Cardiff held out the Lydney pressure and went into half time with their lead intact. Soon after the break they added a second and it seemed it was not going to be Lydney’s day. However the “Never say die” attitude that has marked Lydney’s performances this season shone through, and after a break down the right flank from Will Aldridge the ball broke to Will Hunt who smashed home from close range to give the home team hope.
Soon everything was going Lydney’s way with Cardiff becoming more and more frustrated giving away possession and collecting cards as their discipline began to let them down.
Lydney equalised with 10 minutes to go when their new midfield maestro “Manny” created an opening for himself, drawing the keeper to fire home from a narrow angle.
This set up a tense final period with Cardiff trying desperately to keep Lydney out. With less than 5 minutes remaining a long ball from Saunders at right back found Manny free on the Cardiff 25, he in turn slotted the ball through the defence where Gavin Moore was on hand to finish and claim a deserved 3 points for Lydney.
Lydney’s man of the match vote was a split decision between Manny and Gavin Moore , but with the whole team putting in an excellent performance. More of the same will be needed next week when Lydney are travelling to take on Cardiff Medics.
